Bennie Seltzer | Associate Head Coach
The 2022-23 season will be the third for associate head coach Bennie Seltzer who joined the Texas State men's basketball program in October 2020. He primarily works with the wings and assists on defensive strategy while also overseeing the recruiting areas in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the east coast.
In two seasons with the Bobcats, Seltzer has helped the team win back-to-back Sun Belt Conference championships (2021, 2022), win 39 games -- including a 24-6 conference record -- and reach the NIT for the first time in program history.
Seltzer came from the University of Evansville men's basketball program where he was hired in August 2019 and prior to that spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater – Washington State. The native of Birmingham, Ala. brings extensive experience to the Bobcats’ program.
Prior to his time at WSU, Seltzer spent two seasons on the staff at Loyola with head coach Porter Moser. In 2016-17, the Ramblers defeated Washington State in the Paradise Jam.
Seltzer had two stints at Indiana University with Coach Tom Crean. He was an assistant coach with the Hoosiers from 2008 through 2012 before rejoining the IU staff as the Director of Player Performance in 2014. In his time in Bloomington, Seltzer helped the Hoosiers recruit some of the top talents in the country including Victor Oladipo and Christian Watford. The Hoosiers spent 10 weeks ranked atop the polls in 2012-13 and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
In 2012, Seltzer was named the head coach of Samford University in his hometown of Birmingham. In just two seasons, Seltzer recruited two Southern Conference Freshmen of the Year in Tim Williams and Isaiah Williams.
His coaching career began in 1997 as an assistant at the University of Oklahoma. He worked with the Sooners until 2006 when he joined Coach Crean's staff at Marquette. He remained with the Golden Eagles until 2008 when he joined the Hoosiers.
As a player at Washington State, Seltzer made a lasting impact on the Cougar program. Playing from 1990 through 1993, Seltzer accumulated 473 assists, a total that continues to sit atop the program record book. At the time of his graduation, he ranked second with 1,423 points and third in career steals and minutes played. As a senior, he was named a First Team All-Pac 10 player while averaging 17.9 points per game. He was inducted into the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Hall of Honor in 2015.
Seltzer has a wife DicQues and two sons named Diamond and Bennie III.
Donte Mathis | Assistant Coach
Former Bobcat men's basketball legend Donte Mathis joined the Texas State coaching staff in August 2021. In his role, Mathis tutors the Texas State guards and oversees the recruiting areas of East Texas, Houston, Louisiana and Arizona.
In his first season on the staff in 2021-22, he helped the Bobcats win 21 games, capture their second straight Sun Belt Conference championship, and reach the NIT for the first time in program history.
Mathis had a decorated four-year career with the Bobcats where he ranks No. 4 all-time with 1,622 points, No. 16 all-time with 567 rebounds, and No. 4 all-time with 161 steals. Mathis led Texas State to a Southland Conference Championship in 1999 and was the Southland Conference Player of the Year the same season.
Overall, Mathis was a three-time All-Southland Conference selection (1997-99) and made the All-Southland tournament team in 1997 and 1999. Mathis was also inducted into the Athletic Alumni T-Association Hall of Honor in 2020.
Mathis previously served as the head men’s basketball coach at Brentwood Christian School in Austin, Texas last year following a two-year stint as the head coach at Texas Christian School. At Texas Christian School, Mathis led the team to the TCAL 4A State Championship quarterfinals in 2018 and the TCAL 6A State Championship game in 2019.
Prior to becoming a head coach, Mathis served as a clinician in partnership with two-time NBA Champion Hakeem Olajuwon to develop basketball internationally, volunteered in the grassroots basketball sector where he recruited, developed, and provided outlets for student-athletes to earn collegiate scholarships, and was a player development specialist where her provided offseason skill development for collegiate and professional athletes since 2013.
Jay Smith | Assistant Coach
Smith was hired as a Texas State men's basketball assistant coach in July 2023. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he also plays a primary role in recruiting.
A Louisiana native, Smith joined the Bobcats after spending four seasons at New Orleans as a top assistant coach. From 2019 to 2023, he played a key role in the development of several school record-holders with the Privateers and helped the team post an 18-win season and reach the College Basketball Classic in 2021-22.
Before New Orleans, Smith was the head coach at Wiley College (NAIA) in Marshall, Texas. In two seasons leading the program, he lifted the team to a 44-17 record. In his final season in 2018-19, he and the Wildcats went 24-7, reached the NAIA Sweet Sixteen, and captured their first national tournament win in 49 years.
That season, Smith was named the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Coach of the Year and saw several Wildcats earn All-American and all-conference honors.
Prior to Wiley College, Smith was an assistant coach and director of player development for LSU-Alexandria (NAIA) for three seasons. The team went 86-9 over the stretch and won three straight conference championships and two conference tournament titles. In 2017, he helped the team reach the NAIA Fab Four and finish the season with a 34-1 record.
Smith’s coaching career began at the high school level where he was an assistant coach for eight years at Comeaux High School in Lafayette, La. He helped lead the team to several firsts, including a district championship, top-28 appearance, district MVP, All-Acadiana MVP, and a McDonald’s All-American.
Aaron Proctor | Director of Basketball Operations/Assistant Coach
Aaron Proctor is in his first year with the Texas State men's basketball team after being hired in August 2023.
Proctor arrives in San Marcos after spending the past two seasons at Lamar as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations. He spent the 2020-21 campaign in the same role at Southeast Missouri State.
Overall, Proctor brings 17 years of coaching experience to the Bobcats, including four years as a head coach at the high school level and two stints as an AAU head coach.
Proctor took the job at West Plains after spending the 2018-19 campaign at Arkansas-Fort Smith. He joined the Lions after a one-year stint as the head coach of North Forest High School in Houston. His time at North Forest was one of three high school head coaching jobs which also included stops at Heights High School and Alvin High School.
For two years, Proctor served on staff at Kansas State as a graduate assistant coach. During his time with the Wildcats, they recorded 38 wins – including a 20-win season in 2016-17 – and advanced to the 2017 NCAA Tournament where KSU defeated Wake Forest in its first-round game.
A native of Houston, Proctor attended Cal State-San Bernardino where he played one season for head coach Jeff Olivier. During that season (2004-05), Proctor helped lead the Coyotes to a 21-6 record and captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association title and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
He graduated from CSUSB with a bachelor’s degree in 2006. Following graduation, Proctor went on to teach at the high school level before returning to college to receive his master’s degree from Kansas State in 2017.
Proctor and his wife, Ashford, have a daughter, Harper.
Ojai Black | Team Operations Coordinator
Ojai Black is in his first season as the team operations coordinator for Texas State men’s basketball. The previous two years saw him serve as the team's graduate assistant coach. Black is a former Bobcat student-athlete who played with the team in 2014-2017.
In the first season on staff, the Bobcats won the 2020-21 Sun Belt Conference regular-season Championship behind an 18-7 overall record, including a 12-3 Sun Belt Conference mark. The conference title was the first since joining the Sun Belt in 2013-14, and the first conference title for the Bobcats since winning the Southland Conference in 1999.
As a player, Black started in 68 of the 98 games he appeared in. Black averaged 5.6 points and shot 41.0% from the field. He totaled 287 assists which rank No. 9 all-time and rank No. 10 in the single-season record book with 144 assists and 998 total minutes played in the 2016-17 season. In the 2015-16 season, Black led the team with 3.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game before leading the team in assists (4.0 per game), and free-throw percentage (75.0%) in the 2016-17 season.
Black graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sports Science and is pursuing a master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.
